DIED OF WOUNDS

At the New Zealand Stationary Hospital, Amiens, on Jan.24th, from wounds received in action on Jan. 22nd, Rifleman Henry Gladstone Hood (Rifle Brigade), son of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Hood, of Barton Blount, and grandson of Mr. Henry Hood, of Rose Cottage, Ashbourne, aged 18. Rifleman Hood, who was a native of Bushton, Tutbury, although only 18 years of age, was of fine stature, standing over 6 ft. and proportionately built. He volunteered in July, 1915, on the appeal made by Colonel Sir H. H. Raphael Bart., M.P., and joined the King's Royal Rifles. He trained at Gidea Park, Sir Herbert's Essex seat, then at Whitley Common, Godalming, and finally at Aldershot. He was ultimately transferred to the Rifle Brigade, and proceeded to the front nearly a year ago. His company officer has written in high terms of his conduct and abilities as a soldier before leaving England. He is the lad who met with a serious accident on Needwood Forest several years ago, when Drs. Bulford, Dobbs and Wolfenden operated, and all despaired of his life.
